Robert Hancock Goodwin, M.D.
Comments: This is my father! He worked at St. Luke's from 1934-1988, where he was Head of Obstetrics. He was the fundraising "lead" for the YWCA in the 1960s and a prominent community member. Articles about Dr. Goodwin are available at the "Standard Times". Photo taken circa 1960.
My father was an obstetrician and delivered many babies over the years from 1935- about 1970. In and around New Bedford he is probably best known for that fact. Mothers of my friends who were patients used to exclaim, "How wonderful your father is! What a sense of humor!" As his child, I rarely saw his humor. But then as my friends, themselves, became his patients, they said the same thing. He was beloved by his patients.

Comments: Married at St John the Baptists in Boston, Ma, right after my grandmother disembarked from a ship from Portugal. She travelled to Portugal from their home in Ribeira Granda Sao Antone, Cape Verde. My grandfather left his home in Cape Verde in 1913. His descendents still live in his home 2011. Notice my grandmother's wedding ring is too large for her finger. My grandmother would always talk about "minha terra" (my land). The trip to America was so difficult that she never returned. I finally visited my grandparents' village in 2005. I visited and ate in my grandfather's home and touched my grandfather's home. I found out that I have more relatives in Cape Verde than I do in America. It was not until I met my family in Cape Verde that I became connected from the heart.

My Parents at a 9/18 Golf Club Formal Dance
Comments: These always occurred on or around their wedding anniversary, Nov. 13, 1948. My parents were married at St. John the Baptist in New Bedford, MA. They were told that they would be married in a side altar since it was a certain saint's day and thus they could not be married at the main altar. I was very fortunate to have these two people for parents. They both taught me how to survive in this world. My dad was a District Chief in the New Bedford fire department and taught me how to study as he studied for each rank in the fire department. He always "aced" in exams. My mother wanted to be a nurse and achieved being a RN which was her dream. I was taught to go after my dreams and to never be afraid of hard work.

Mom + Dad's Wedding Picture 1921 Day After Her Arrival From Germany
Comments: How they met: Both families knew each other. Her father was a professional photographer and his family photo was taken by him. My father came to New Bedford in 1913 and continued to correspond with her and both forwarding photos of each other. He sent for her in 1921. Her ship was due to arrive in New York. While he was on the train reading the list of ship arrivals he noticed her ship had been changed to arrive in Boston. He hopped off the train at next stop. Took another train to Boston. When he arrived, ship was already in. Hardly anyone around and he was wondering how they would find each other since she didn't know a word of English. He decided to go down to lower platform where ship was. As he descended down stairway, he spotted her coming up with her suitcase.

Young Darcey Whyte
Comments: My father was a Golden Gloves boxer. Born in Panama he came to the USA through Ellis Island as a fifteen year old. After years as an amateur, he boxed as a professional throughout the northeast. In later years Darcey managed and trained many young boxers in the New Bedford area. Two of these were brothers Lou and Mickey Lowther. In the 1950s Lou made a pastel portrait of Darcey from a photo made about 20 years earlier. He changed his name to Whyte because his manager, Jimmy Watson, already had a boxer named William White. He then adopted Darcey and left out William.
