The Volpe Family

Comments: Large Italian family. Came to the U.S. in late 1890s. Louis Volpe moved to Newton from the North End of Boston. He was a cousin of John Volpe, former MA Governor. Louis married Trinity Cardona and had six children. Trinity died three weeks after giving birth to Leslie. Louis eventually married Aida Putini. The family lived in Newton Centre and spent time each summer in Natick at "the beach". I am the daughter of the oldest child of A. George Volpe. I moved to Natick with my family in 1990. This photo was taken in the late 1920s.

My Mother's Father, Edward Thomas Kiley, as a ROTC Cadet at Brighton High School

Comments: He graduated in 1908 and married his High School sweetheart, Marguerite Yanke. He worked as an electrician for the telephone company in Boston. He wired the family Christmas tree when most people were still using candles. He also built an early crystal set. He died in 1919 from the flu epidemic. Marguerite Yanke graduated in 1908 from Brighton High School also. She died in 1912 from complications from childbirth. Photo was taken circa 1907.

Winter Sports - Rose Jacobs and My Aunt Evelyn W. Kiley

Comments: Wooden skis, no metal edges, ONE pole. Wooden/rawhide snowshoes - "beavertails". Rose is on skis; Evelyn on snowshoes. I still have the snowshoes and skis like that. Evelyn also graduated in 1908 (skipped a grade) in the same class as her brother Ned. She also worked for the telephone company - New England Telephone.

On a Swing at Norumbega Park

Comments: Baby Marguerite and cousin Ann Marie Kiley at Norumbega, August 1947. Norumbega Park was at the end of the Bemis busline. It's now the location of the Newton Mariott Hotel, at the intersection of Routes 128 and 30, across from the Charles River from Route 128. Children's bus fare from Newton Corner to Norumbega Park was five cents. Middlesex and Boston Bus went through Natick also.

Comments: Milo served for many years on the Personnel Board and the Planning Board. Blanche served on the Finance Board. She was also a member of many clubs. Bob became Captain at the Fire Department. Later he became an owner/operator of Natick Marine, that was located on East Central Street. Bill was a member of the Massachusetts State Police. Dick served with the FBI and later owned a security company in California.
