Bridie Donohue and Brendan Tonra
Within weeks of arriving in the United States from Ireland, Brendan Tonra went to a dance at the InterColonial Club on Dudley Street in Roxbury, and afterwards went up to compliment the band on its performance. He was told if he had a “fiddle and a clean white shirt” he could be used the very next week. He played at Hibernian Hall, the InterColonial Club, and Rose Croix for many years, and became widely known as a legendary fiddler and composer. He met his wife, Bridget (Bridie) Donohue at the InterColonial Club shortly after arriving in the U.S.

The Emerald Isle Orchestra
Played mostly at Winslow Hall, corner of Warren Street, over the old Waldorf, and Mal's Drugstore.
They were one of the many Irish dance orchestras that performed in the numerous dance halls and ballrooms located in the Dudley Square area of Roxbury during the 1920s through the late 1960s. "See You at the Hall: Boston's Golden Era of Irish Music and Dance" by Susan Gedutis (Northeastern University Press, 2005) brings to life the rich history of that era.
