Penikese Island School, September 1973

Comments: Building a house for the Penikese Island School - copied from the Jethro Coffin House, Nantucket. Students, volunteers and staff working. The main beam of the house was salvaged from the beach.

First Building, Our Home, on Penikese Island

Comments: Design was copied from the Coffin House on Nantucket. The staff and kids of the school built all the buildings on Penikese. All materials were brought by boat from Woods Hole, 14 miles away.

Coastal Freighter Moved to Penikese by Dan Clark

Comments: This coastal freighter was moved to Penikese by Dan Clark of Woods Hole. It was used as a dormitory while the house was being built. There were comfortable bunks and a wood stove down below.

Comments: Dave Masch cooking in the old forge before the main house was complete, establishing the great tradition of great grub at Penikese. We cooked on open fires until we got the building roofed; a great improvement.
